MRI Scan: What It Is, Types, Procedure & Benefits
Everything you need to know about MRI scan, its types, procedure, cost and benefits.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive imaging test that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to create highly detailed images of organs, soft tissues, bones, and virtually all other internal body structures. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRI does not use ionising radiation, which makes it one of the safest diagnostic options available today.
What is an MRI Scan?
An MRI scan is a diagnostic imaging technique that produces cross-sectional images of the body. A powerful magnet aligns the hydrogen atoms in your body, and radio-frequency pulses knock them out of alignment. The signals released as the atoms return to their original state are turned into precise images by a computer.
Because MRI is exceptional at differentiating soft tissues, it is often the preferred test for evaluating the brain, spine, joints, abdomen, and pelvis.
Types of MRI Scans
- Brain MRI: Detects tumours, strokes, multiple sclerosis, and infections.
- Spine MRI: Evaluates disc herniation, spinal stenosis, and nerve compression.
- Knee & Joint MRI: Assesses ligament tears, meniscus injuries, and cartilage damage.
- Abdominal MRI: Examines the liver, kidneys, pancreas, and other abdominal organs.
- Cardiac MRI: Studies heart structure, function, and blood flow.
- Functional MRI (fMRI): Maps brain activity by detecting changes in blood flow.
How Does an MRI Scan Work?
The MRI machine is a large tube-shaped magnet. When you lie inside, the magnet temporarily realigns water molecules in your body. Radio waves cause these aligned atoms to produce faint signals, which are used to create detailed cross-sectional images.
In some cases, a contrast agent called gadolinium is injected into a vein to improve the clarity of the images, especially for tumours, inflammation, or blood vessels.
MRI Scan Procedure
The procedure is painless and typically takes 30 to 60 minutes. You will be asked to remove metal objects, change into a gown, and lie still on the scanner table. The technologist communicates with you throughout the scan from the control room.
- Schedule your appointment and share your medical history.
- Remove all metal accessories and change into the gown provided.
- Lie still inside the scanner while images are captured.
- Get your digital report within 24 hours.
Benefits of MRI Scan
- No ionising radiation — safer than X-ray or CT.
- Excellent soft-tissue contrast for accurate diagnosis.
- Detects diseases at an early stage.
- Non-invasive and generally painless.
- Useful across almost every organ system.
MRI Scan Cost in India
The cost of an MRI scan in India typically ranges from ₹3,000 to ₹15,000 depending on the body part, the strength of the machine (1.5T vs 3T), and whether contrast is required. At Easy Scan Care, we offer transparent pricing, NABL-standard imaging, and reports within 24 hours.
